SOUL FOOD:

'Urban monks' make home in Fremont

By TERRY VOGEL

Picture a serene valley with an Old World Mission at the top of a hill. There is a bakery, a winery, cheese making and handmade crafts; all for the purpose of sustaining and serving the community.

Now picture Seattle's Fremont District, a neighborhood described by its residents as the "center of the universe," with arts, crafts, eclectic shops and a growing community. These are different communities but with a similar opportunity for people of faith.

The model of "urban monks" chosen by Pastor Karen Ward and her fellow faithful at Church of the Apostles in Fremont is one that melds a spiritual life with the music, arts, coffee and relevant conversation.

The idea of a spiritual life out in the world with no labels, only the "Good News" as their guide, is intriguing and somewhat new. The ongoing challenge of being both of faith and service as well as true to the character of the community is an obvious lifestyle choice for this new ministry.

They are now shaping a community and ministry across from the now-closed St. Paul's Lutheran Church on 4301 Fremont Avenue N. in a storefront that also is home to an art gallery, poetry corner and a fully licensed cafe called "the Living Room." This bold venture is a collaborative effort supported by the Lutheran and Episcopal Churches.

Church of the Apostles (COTA, as they are known) is also prayerfully considering and in dialogue to reclaim the former St. Paul's Lutheran Church building and bring the structure to its former glory as a community partner. At present, the Compass Center is occupying the building but will vacate next year as their soon-to-be new home is presently being renovated in the Pioneer Square neighborhood.

This "ancient faith, future church" is poised to accept and welcome all who seek a spiritual aspect to their life but are looking for something different. Their Web site, www.apostleschurch.org, speaks to their efforts of "living the faith and being the message," so says Pastor Ward. Stop by for a cup of java; you are welcome to their "Living Room."
