Civic Light Opera theater camps

Civic Light Opera will offer two summer theater camps for young people.

The high school program will begin July 5. The middle school (3rd through 8th grades) program starts on July 19. Both will continue through Aug. 1.

The two groups will combine to perform the musical "Once on this Island," with performances at the Bitter Lake Community Center and Langston Hughes Theater.

The camps are held Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the CLO production headquarters, 932 N.127th St. (one block west of Aurora Avenue North). Classes include lessons in acting, dancing and singing.

The cost of the camp is $275 for middle school; $375 for high school.

U-District Outdoor Cinema

The University District Outdoor Cinema will be showing movies under the stars on Saturday nights this summer.

The films will be shown in the parking lot of the University Heights Center, at Northeast 50th Street and University Way Northeast. The lot will open at 7:30 p.m. and the movies will begin at dusk. Participants can bring their own seating or rent a chair at the event. The suggested donation is $5.

The film screenings will also feature live music, contests, vendors and prizes. The University District Outdoor Cinema is presented by Jet City Pizza Co.

The movie schedule is: "Amelie," July 3; "Big Fat Liar, July 10; "Bowling for Columbine," July 17; "Mulholland Drive," July 24; "Whale Rider," July 31; "Madeline," Aug. 7; "Dazed & Confused," Aug. 14; "Lost in Translation," Aug. 21; "When Harry Met Sally," Aug. 28.

ZooTunes concerts planned

Tickets are still available for the following Washington Mutual ZooTunes concerts at the Woodland Park Zoo this summer (five concerts in the series have already sold out as of late June): Nanci Griffith, $19, July 14; Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, $19, July 28; Greg Brown with special guest Todd Snider, $18, Aug. 4; and Aimee Mann with special guest the Honeydogs, $19, Aug. 25.

A major fundraiser for the zoo, Washington Mutual ZooTunes is held outdoors in the zoo's North Meadow where concert-goers spread out with blankets and low-backed patio chairs.

Zoo gates open for concert goers at 5 p.m. The concerts begin 6 p.m. and end no later than 8:30 p.m. Concerts are held rain or shine. There are no ticket refunds

The zoo's North Meadow is near the North Gate off North 59th Street and Phinney Avenue North.

Tickets can either be purchased at the gate or in advance at PCC Markets (a $2 service fee is added).
