Greenwood garden tour, July 10

Garden writer Marty Wingate will lead a walking tour of streetside gardens (planted parking strips and traffic circles) in the Greenwood neighborhood on Saturday, July 10, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The event is sponsored by the University of Washington's Center for Urban Horticulture. Wingate will offer examples of plants which can grow on lean soils without supplemental watering.

Participants should wear walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. The cost is $27 for Arboretum Foundation members and $30 for non-members. Preregistration is required by calling 685-8033.

Rose Garden in full bloom

The Woodland Park Rose Garden at Woodland Park Zoo is in full bloom and is expected to remain that way through late September, the Seattle Parks Department recently announced.

The award-winning 2.5-acre garden boasts 290+ varieties of roses and over 5,000 individual plants. The garden's extensive array of roses includes hybrid teas, miniatures, climbers, tree roses, David Austens and All-America winners. It also holds the distinction of being one of only 24 All-America Rose Selections Test Gardens in the United States.

The garden, located at North 50th Street and Fremont Avenue North, is open to the public daily, from 7 a.m. until dusk. Admission to the garden is free, but parking in the adjacent parking lot is $3.50. For more information, call 684-4800 or visit the zoo's Web site at www.zoo.org.
