Little Brook Park party, June 5

A ceremony to celebrate the naming of Little Brook Park, 14043 32nd Ave. NE, will be held Saturday, June 5.

The event begins at 10 a.m. with a work party in the park, crafts and other children's activities, and an appearance by the firefighters from Station 39. The park naming ceremony is at noon, and will be followed by a picnic lunch and barbecue provided by the North Seattle Sunriser Kiwanis club.

The Little Brook Park property was purchased by the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation in 1995. Play equipment for children was added in 1999. The portion of Little Brook Creek (a tributary of Thornton Creek) which crosses the site was recently daylighted and a habitat area created. Among the project partners were the Thornton Creek Alliance, Seattle Parks and Recreation, Seattle Public Utilities, King County Land and Water Resources, EarthCorps, and Windenbrook Apartments.

Fremont Library closed for repairs

The Fremont Branch Library recently closed for remodeling and repairs that are expected to last nine months. The library, built in 1921, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The repairs, funded by the 1998 "Libraries for All" bond measure, will include ventilation and electrical upgrades, additional wheelchair-accessible facilities and the creation of a more efficient layout. For details, visit the Seattle Public Library Web site at www.spl.org/lfa/LFApr/branchlibraries/fremont/freclosure040416.html.

Vandals strike Meadowbrook Pond

Vandals struck Meadowbrook Pond in May, defacing several pieces of public art with graffiti, according to City officials, who held an event on May 18 to call attention to the crime. Cleaning up graffiti on public property cost Seattle Public Utilities more than $500,000 last. That's in addition to clean-up costs paid by Seattle Parks and Recreation and private property owners. Citizens are encouraged to take steps to prevent graffiti and to report graffiti vandalism when they see it. Meadowbrook Pond is located at Northeast 107th Street and 35th Avenue Northeast, across the street from Meadowbrook Community Center.

Sullivan appointed to county post

King County Executive Ron Sims recently appointed former County Council Chair Cynthia Sullivan to direct his Metropolitan Initiative, a multi-year effort to bring national attention to the need for changes in how regional issues such as transportation, affordable housing, healthcare and job creation needs are addressed and funded.

Sullivan, a Wedgwood resident, said she is "honored to be able to continue the work I have enjoyed so much during my tenure as a councilmember, and to expand sound

growth management policy to the national agenda."

Sullivan, a University of Washington-educated urban planner, served on the County Council for 20 years. She was defeated in her bid for reelection last November by challenger Bob Ferguson.
