St. John School scholars honored
Nineteen students from St. John School in Greenwood were recognized by the Washington Search for Young Scholars at a recent awards ceremony. The WSYS is a new program developed by the University of Washington's Robinson Center for Young Scholars to identify academically talented youth in grades five through eight. To qualify, fifth and sixth graders must score in the top 3 percent statewide on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). St. John students who met this requirement were Sam Bulkley, Peter Christiansen, Chris Kaperak, Sarah McDonagh, James Reid, John Stoeck, and Chase Walker. Seventh and eighth graders were recognized based on their performance on either of two college entrance exams, the ACT or the SAT. "State Level" recognition was earned by seventh graders who scored equal to or better than 50 percent of college bound seniors. St. John students who met this requirement were Gina Belche, David Eggers, William Hatfield, Casey Hedeen, Sam McNutt, Alexi Pors, and Michael Roush. To meet the "State Level" requirement, eighth-graders needed to score equal to or better than 65 percent of college-bound freshman. St. John students who met this requirement were Rory Fitzpatrick, Annika Kaufman, and Laura Thornquist. Two eighth graders from St. John School met the "Grand Level" criteria by scoring better than 96 percent of college bound students: Elena Grout and Courtney Wagner-Robinson.
