Middle Earth Ball to benefit arts
The Middle Earth Ball, a benefit costume ball fund-raiser for local arts groups, will transform Ballard's Segway Building with sets that recreate some of the most famous scenes from the Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy. There will actually be two Middle Earth Balls: a May 22 event restricted to persons 21 and over and a June 5 event open to people of all ages (under 16 with an adult). Both events start at 7:30 p.m. and go on until 2 a.m. Proceeds from the events will benefit a trio of local arts non-profit groups: Wing-it Productions, NW Cyber Artists and the Fremont Arts Council. The music lineup on May 22 features The Paperboys, the Geoffrey Castle Band, Ancestor Radio, classical guitarist Andre Feriante, DJ Osiris, Rickyleebob and The Town Criers. The June 5 event is a DJ live music event with DJ Osiris & Michael Manahan, The Rafe Pearlman Band and VJ Pablo. A costume contest with $100 prizes will be held in three categories: most elaborate, most original, and most daring. Food and drink may be purchased. The Segway Building is located at 5701 22nd Ave. NW. Tickets for the May 22 event are $25 advance/$30 at the door; tickets for the June 5 event are $15 advance/$20 at the door.
Seattle Public Theater presents 'The Tavern'
Broadway legend George M. Cohan was also a accomplished playwright and his best plan, "The Tavern," will be produced by Seattle Public Theater at the Bathhouse from April 30 through May 23. "The Tavern" is set at the turn of the last century in a ramshackle inn somewhere in America where several travelers hope to find refuge as a dangerous highwayman terrorizes the countryside. A dark and mysterious vagabond also takes shelter in the tavern from the howling wind and becomes a murder suspect, as does the entire group of guests and staff. SPT is offering a $5 discount on the admission to "The Tavern" to anyone who brings in a ticket stub from the 5th Avenue Theater's Cohan biography/musical "Yankee Doodle Dandy!" to encourage attendance to both productions. Performances are on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18, with discounts for groups, seniors and children. The Bathhouse Theater is located at 7312 W. Greenlake Drive N. To purchase tickets, call 325-6500 or go to www.ticketwindowonline.com.
