Scramble up to Licton Springs, May 29

The Cascade Orienteering Club is sponsoring the North Aurora Street Scramble on Saturday, May 29.

Thirty locations are circled on a neighborhood map. Participants must visit as many as possible in 90 minutes by walking or bicycling (there is also a three-hour option). Competitors can work as a team or solo. Prizes will be awarded.

Meet at Licton Springs Park, 9536 Ashworth Ave. N, with registration starting at 8:30 a.m. and the event at 10 a.m. The cost is $15/$12 students and seniors/$3 kids ages 6 to 12/$25 families.

Mother's Day hike at Carkeek

Come for a leisurely hike on smooth accessible trails while learning about the salmon program at Carkeek Park on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 9, from 1-2:30 p.m. Visit the Piper Family Orchard, release salmon fry and enjoy refreshments under the cedar trees. This is a great chance to unwind and appreciate the outdoors with your family. Meet in front of the King County Pump Station in Carkeek Park. This event is free. Hale fitness center now open

Students and staff at Nathan Hale High School in the Meadowbrook neighborhood can now choose to get fit in the school's spacious new fitness center. The Hale Fitness Center replaces the old weight room with three times the space. After many months of cleaning, painting and installing flooring and equipment, the fitness center (which occupies the space formerly occupied by the auto shop program, which has moved to Ingraham High School) officially opened on April 16. The fitness center will be used for weight training classes during the school day and will be available to students and staff for after-school use. Open gym at Meadowbrook

Meadowbrook Community Center at 10517 35th Ave. NE, will offer open gym times on the following days and times in May: Basketball Mondays and Wednesdays, 1-2:30 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m.; Volleyball Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. For information about other activities and programs offered at Meadowbrook Community Center, call 684-7522 or visit the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department Web site at www.seattle.gov/parks.

Shoot hoops at Green Lake C.C.

Green Lake Community Center's gymnasium is available for adults, ages 18 and older, to come down and play pickup basketball games during "free shoot" (or open gym) times this spring: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 1-3 p.m., Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 3:30 p.m. Free shoot hours are subject to cancellation for special program scheduling. The community center is located at 7201 E. Green Lake Drive N. Sand Point offers spring classes

Registration for spring classes at the new Sand Point Community Center has started. Classes and activities are available for all ages and includes sports, fitness, theater, dance, art and ceramics, music, special events, martial arts, nature and more. Tai Chi classes at Green Lake

Green Lake Community Center is offering free Tai Chi classes for adults, Tuesdays, from 7-8 p.m., through June 30. Tai Chi is a form of Chinese exercise which uses slow, soft and circular movements to harmonize body and mind. It's often described as "moving meditation" a way to achieve health and tranquility, according to the community center's brochure of spring programs. Tai Chi is excellent for balance, relaxation and concentration. Participants are advised to wear loose comfortable clothing. The classes, led by instructor Jim Guidon, are open to anyone, age 18 and older. The sessions will be held either in the Game Room at the Green Lake Community Center, or outdoor, near the lake shore, weather permitting. The community center is located at 7201 E.
