Lake City Chamber launches breakfast meeting series

By CLAYTON PARK

The Lake City Chamber of Commerce on March 17 held the first of what it hopes will become a regular once-a-month breakfast meeting at the Lake City Claire's Pantry Restaurant.

Nearly three dozen people turned out for the meeting, which provided members a chance to network with one another and to hear announcement about upcoming chamber events.

The chamber breakfast meetings will be held at Claire's every third Wednesday of the month, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.

Some of the highlights of the first meeting included the following:

Bruce Edwards, a financial planner with a firm called LPL, was introduced as this year's Lake City Chamber chairman.

Lake City Chamber Executive Director Jo McNeal announced that this year's Lake City Summer Festival will be held on Saturday, Aug. 7.

Molly Burke reported that the Lake City Farmer's Market is set to open May 27 and will be held every Thursday afternoon through Oct. 14, behind the Lake City Fire Station.

Lynne Shanholtzer, a spokeswoman for the Sam's Club store at 13550 Aurora Ave. N. reported that the store recently began a project that will add 40,000 square feet of space, but will remain open throughout the construction, which is expected to take six to eight months. The bigger store will allow Sam's Club to offer a larger selection of products and to add a new pharmacy.

Amy Morehouse of Costco Wholesale Corp. invited chamber members to attend a business expo that was planned for that coming weekend at the Costco store in Shoreline.

David Howry, manager of Frontier Bank's Lake City branch, said that the Lake City Chamber is planning to hold regular evening socials, with the first one set to be held at his bank. A date has not yet been determined. "The idea is not only to get to know one another but to do business with other chamber members," he said.

Howry also invited those in attendance to drop by to visit the Lake City Frontier Bank anytime, noting that they also serve coffee.

Peter Koshi announced that he was attending on behalf of his daughter, the owner of the new Flava Coffeehouse in front of the Solara apartment complex along Lake City Way.

Koshi got a chuckle out of some of those in attendance when he noted that Flava Coffeehouse, too, offers coffee.

David Levinger of a pedestrian advocacy group called Feet First said his organization is planning to produce a walking map for the Lake City neighborhood that will be distributed in September.

Imogene Inglet of Arts 'N' Flowers reported that the Lake City Mini-Park renovation project is set to begin in July and that construction is set to begin on changes to Lake City Way (a.k.a. State Route 522) in June.

Dan Glaefke of American Lease expressed concerns that several left-turn lanes will be eliminated along Lake City Way, including the ones in front of the Lake City Wendy's fast-food restaurant and Corry's Dry Cleaning, which could affect those businesses.

Inglet announced that the chamber plans to reduce the number of luncheon meetings it holds to probably only one a quarter, as opposed to monthly.
