School Retirees Appreciation Week March 15-21

Washington State Governor, Gary Locke, has declared the week of March 15 through 21 as School Retirees Appreciation Week. The Governor writes in his proclamation that the week is designed to aid citizens in recognizing the special challenges faced by educators and other school employees after retiring. Locke also applauds the Washington State School Retirees Association (WSSRA) for promoting charitable projects, sponsoring scholarships, and encouraging retirees to remain active through volunteering in their community.

Student wins national contest

Ballard resident Jarom Schoenfeldt earned two awards in a national student design competition sponsored by the Association of Professional Model Makers conference in Costa Mesa, Calif. The 26-year-old student at the Art Institute of Seattle won first place in transportation design and the Best of Show award for his quarter-scale Mercury outboard motor model, originally built for an advanced model-making class at The Art Institute. An industrial design technology (IDT) major, Schoenfeldt says the model took 60 hours to build. "The reason it's so interesting and unique is that he used so many different kinds of techniques in building it," says Vernon Trevellyan, academic director of the IDT program. "From scratch fabrication to vacuum forming, casting, machining, styrene shaping, and mold making..." Set to graduate in June, Schoenfeldt's dream is to hire on with a special effects film company. While Schoenfeldt is busy completing projects for his graduation portfolio, his side project is a radio-controlled, gas engine Cessna Skylane model, with a 7-foot wingspan. He's been building it in his Ballard garage for the past four years.
