Merrill to exhibit work in Wallingford

Artist Nancy Merrill calls her search for various shards and fragments on the ground around Seattle "urban beach-combing."

Pentimento, an exhibit of new work by Merrill, will be on display at Wallingford Frame Central, 305 NE 45th Street, during the month of February. A reception for the artist will be held Saturday, Feb. 7 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Merrill, a studio art graduate of the College of Creative Studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara, had several exhibitions of her work in California (including one, Noticing, which featured constructions created from items she found beach-combing). She taught in an artist-in-the-schools program in the Santa Barbara area and directed the studio archive of the late Bauhaus Master Herbert Bayer.

After moving to Seattle in 1989, she has worked as a freelance writer and art reviewer, writing pieces that have appeared on National Public Radio's CarTalk and Sandy Bradley's Potluck shows. She also founded a Wallingford neighborhood tree planting program and was honored with a 1993 Seattle Friend of the Tree Award.

Seeking the proper background for the abstract arrangements of shards and fragments and smashed items that comprise Pentimento, Merrill hit upon the idea of burying saturated watercolor paper (in some cases with pigment applied first) in her garden under compost to give it the necessary texture and patina.

Wallingford Frame Central is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The phone number is 632-0073.

Haller Lake to show silent films

The Haller Lake Community Club, at 12579 Densmore Ave. N., will host a monthly silent movie series, beginning Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m., with a showing of "Thief of Bagdad" starring Douglas Fairbanks, and a yet-to-be determined short film. The event will feature live organ music by members of the Puget Sound Theatre Organ Society. Alfredo Escalona, owner of The Maltese Falcon Video Store on Aurora, will introduce the film. Admission is a suggested donation of $5 per person at the door or in advance by calling Bill Johns at 367-3087. Season tickets for all five shows are a suggested donation of $20 per person.

Upcoming shows are scheduled for March 27 ("The General" and "Faust"), April 24 ("Mark of Zorro" and "Nosferato"), May 29 ("Tumbleweeds" and "Metropolis"), and June 26 ("Intolerance").

Proceeds from the film series will go to retire the debt of legal fees incurred by the Nellie Goodhue Committee, a citizens group that had been fighting to prevent the former Nellie Goodhue School site at the intersection of Meridian, Roosevelt and N. 137th St. from being sold to a non-household goods hardware wholesaler that wanted to convert the property into a commercial sales yard.

TV show to feature authors

In addition to steak and seafood, the Berkshire Grill restaurant near Northgate Mall will feature literature on its menu.

The restaurant, at 2132 Northgate Way, is teaming up with Seattle Community Colleges Television Network (SCCtv) to host a monthly program entitled "Northwest Authors at the Berkshire." Taping will take place the fourth Tuesday of each month from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Prior to the taping of each show, the featured authors will be available to sign books, from 3-4 p.m. The show is set to premiere this spring and will be broadcast on Channel 28.

Joe Bergevin, Berkshire general manager, said the concept for the program came from a discussion he had with Ross Davis, SCCtv general manager. Davis had been thinking about doing a Northwest author program, but was unable to find a suitable setting. "He said a lot of business gets done [at restaurants] and a lot of the best conversations happen across the table," said Bergevin.

Taping the show during regular business hours will provide "that bustle of a restaurant in the background," Bergevin said.

The idea has gotten a lot of interest, including an offer from the Seattle Public Library to include tapes of programs in its historical archive.

While some grant funding has been obtained, Bergevin is seeking sponsors.
