Children's Hospital dedicates new building

In January, Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in the Laurelhurst neighborhood dedicated the new five-story Janet Sinegal Patient Care Building at 4800 Sand Point Way NE. Designed by HKS, Inc., of Dallas, Texas, and built by Sellen Construction of Seattle, the buildingincludes artwork created by Northwest artists. The building will increase Children's total inpatient capacity from 208 to 250 beds, the first inpatient bed expansion in 25 years.

The new building is named after Janet Sinegal,an active trustee in Children's Hospital's Guild Association, Foundation and Hospital boards and the first person to serve simultaneously on all three. Together with her husband, Jim, CEO of Costco Wholesale, they have spearheaded fundraising efforts involving Costco employees and vendors that have contributed significantly to Children's. The Sinegals have also given generously to Children's on a personal basis.

The new building will house a medical unit, surgery and rehabilitation units, a meditation room, play areas, teen activity rooms, shower facilities and 80 single- and double-occupancy patient rooms equipped with the latest medical technology.

The facility was made possible by contributions from private donors, who contributed more than half of the total cost of the new $60 million building.

Madison Pool reopens

After a five-month construction closure, Helene Madison Pool, located at 13401 Meridian Ave. N. in the Hallaer Lake neighborhood, re-opened in mid-January. Seattle Parks and Recreation closed the pool on Aug. 11, 2003 for preventive maintenance work on the building, including a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, accessibility improvements, new water lines and the addition of a new family changing room. A chemical fire in October caused structural and smoke damage to the building, delaying reopening by a few weeks.

Among the many program offerings at the pool this winter is a new deep-water fitness class called "Hydrofit." Space is also available for winter season swimming lessons. For more information, call 684-4979. You can also view an online pool schedule at www.seattle.gov/parks/Aquatics/madisonpool.htm.
