Jazz concert, Dec. 20

The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra with guest vocalist Dee Daniels are the featured performers as Earshot Jazz presents its holiday concert of "Sacred Music by Duke Ellington," Saturday, Dec. 20 at 7 :30 p.m. at University Christian Church, 4731 15th Ave. NE.

The orchestra will peform under the direction of Ellington scholar Michael Brockman, professor of saxophone at the University of Washington, and Clarence Acox, drummer and award-winning Garfield High School band director. Among the featured players in the all-star ensemble are trumpeter Floyd Standifer, bassist Phil Sparks, and vocalist James Cadell.

The 60-voice Oregon Repertory Singers, directed by Gil Seeley, will perform Ellington choral works and Tim Hickey will dance the popular "David Danced Before the Lord."

Tickets are $26 for preferred seating, $21 for general admission, and $19 for Earshot Jazz members, students and seniors. They can be purchased at Earshot Jazz, at Bud's Jazz Records, of through all TicketMaster outlets (628-0888).

'Messiah' sing-along, Dec. 26

Singers and instrumentalists are warming up for a North Seattle holiday tradition: University Unitarian Church's "Messiah" sing-and-play-along performance on Friday, Dec. 26 at 7 p.m.

This event, held annually since 1969, will be presented at the church, 6556 35th Ave. NE. The performance will be under the direction of Dr. Steven M. Demorest, artistic director of the Northwest Chamber Chorus and a University of Washington faculty member.

All singers and instrumentalists are invited to participate in the performance of the entire oratorio. Singers are asked to bring their own vocal score ("loaner" scores and a few scores for sale will be available at the event). Instrumentalists are asked to bring their own stands.

Admission is $10/$7 students and seniors. Seating is limited and early arrival is advised; doors open at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be available during the two intermissions in the program. Proceeds from this event benefit the music program at the church.

Solstice concert at Phinney Center, Dec. 20

Musicians Stanley and Kip Greenthal, Christos Govetas, and Jamie Laval will be featured at the Seattle Folklore Society's holiday concert, "A Winter Solstice Evening," held Saturday, Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Phinney Center Community Hall, 6532 Phinney Ave. N.

Stanley sings and performs on the guitar, mandocello, and tenor guitar. His wife, Kip, sings and plays percussion. Govetas, a well known performer of Greek folk music, plays oud, clarinet, bouzouki, and percussion. Laval is the 2002 U.S. National Scottish fiddle champion.

The program will be equally eclectic, featuring traditional winter folk tunes and selections from Stanley Greenthal's new all-instrumental recording, "Melodie Brittany to the Balkans."

Rummage sale to benefit Boys & Girls Club

The Wallingford Boys & Girls Club will hold its annual rummage sale on Jan. 9 and 10. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the club's many youth programs. The event will be held at 1310 N. 45th (entrance on the North 46th Street side of the building) on Friday, Jan. 9, from 6-8 p.m. ($5 admission), and on Saturday, Jan. 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (free admission).

Northwest Boychoir to perform

A 24-year Christmas tradition continues as the Northwest Boychoir presents its "A Festival of Lessons and Carols" concert series.

The University District-based group will present nine performances at venues throughout the greater Seattle area. The final concert featuring the accompaniment of an orchestra will be at St. Mark's Cathedral on Monday, Dec. 22 at 7:30 p.m.

The performances will feature the 40-voice Northwest Boychoir and Vocalpoint! Seattle, an affiliated ensemble of 45 high school age young men and women.
