Yard waste tips

Seattle Public Utilities offers the following tips regarding yard waste: It CAN'T be put in the garbage. Either compost it, take it to the transfer station, or have it collected at your curb every other week by calling 684-3000.

What CAN be put into yard waste collection containers: plant material, grass, leaves, twigs, branches (up to four inches in diameter and four feet in length), plant and tree trimmings, houseplants (no pots), sod (less than 60 pounds), undecorated trees (less than six feet long and four inches in diameter at the base).

What CAN'T be put into yard waste collection containers: plastic or synthetic bags, metal, rocks, gravel, household trash, litter, cement, concrete, garden tools, loose soil, hoses, lumber, bricks, tile, animal waste, fencing material, food waste, nursery pots, boulders, hazardous waste, construction debris.

Yard waste for collection should be put into a rigid container (no larger than 32 gallons) marked "yard waste," or tied with fiber, twine or string (no wire, nylon cording or plastic banding). You can also put yard waste in compostable Kraft Paper Bags or reusable woven poly fabric bags. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected.
