Ballard Civic Center park

The initial community meeting for the Ballard Civic Center park, will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Ballard Segway Building (formerly Safeway), 5701 22nd Ave. NW.

The new park will be built on the Segway Building site on the northwest corner of 22nd Avenue NW and NW 57th Street. The civic center, which is slated to include a library branch and the Ballard neighborhood service center, will be constructed next year.

Among the possible design elements for the Civic Center, as identified in community meetings, are a maritime theme, large lawn, central promenade, large "landmark" trees, circulation that utilizes the perimeter street sidewalks, and public art. The project is funded by an allocation of $2.47 million from the 2000 Pro Parks Levy.

Swift and Company have been chosen design consultants for the park.

Public input on park design will continue through early 2004. Park construction, including demolition of the Segway building, will begin the following year and will be completed by the end of 2005.
