Special events planned for farmers markets

By CHRIS CURTIS

The Seattle Neighborhood Farmers Markets are still in full swing as the fall season ushers in huge harvests from both sides of the state. Melons, apples, pears, grapes, eggplant, corn, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, greens, winter squash, cucumber, pumpkins and root vegetables are all piled high on the farm tables.

Autumn also brings fresh eggs, free-range chickens and turkeys, local pasture raised beef and pork, farmstead cheeses and chanterelles, matsutaki and lobster wild mushrooms.

Fresh salmon and oysters are also available at the neighborhood Farmers Markets and expect to see wine brought to Market by Washington State's small vintners in late September.

Cooking Demonstrations and Produce Tastings continue at all Markets. The popular "What's Cookin'" chefs series challenges local celebrity chefs to create a dish for four using only fresh Market ingredients and keeping the cost under $10.

LAKE CITY FARMERS MARKET:

The remaining dates this year for the Lake City Farmers Market, held every Thursday, from 3-7 p.m. at NE 127th and 30th NE (behind the Lake City Fire Station), are: Oct. 2 (with a cooking demonstration by chef Seppo Farrey; Oct. 9 (with live music by guitar-and-flute duo Image); and Oct. 16 (live music tba).

UNIVERSITY DISTRICT FARMERS MARKET:

In October, special events at the University District Farmers Market held every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the south playfield at University Heights Center (NE 50th and University Way) will take place on Oct. 11 (cooking demonstration by raw foods chef Rachelle Beauxje), and Oct. 25 (apple tasting event).
