Garden camps for kids
Seattle Tilth this summer will present one-week day camp programs for children at the Seattle Tilth Children's Garden, 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N. The programs cost $175 to $200, with discounts for Seattle Tilth members. Adventure day camps for children ages 5 to 10 years include: Bubble, Bubble, Soil and Trouble (July 7-11; a cooking class on herbs); Insect Academy (July 21-25; instruction on the insect world); and Pick It, Cook It, Eat It (Aug. 11-15; a fresh food cooking class). For older children (ages 10-14), Seattle Tilth will present Farm to Feast (Aug. 4-8; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.), a gardening program with field trips to see how food grows and how it reaches the consumer, from organic farm to market to restaurant to food bank. Gardening class
The University of Washington's Center for Urban Horticulture will offer a class on Tuesday, July 15, on how to plant a salad container garden now for harvest in late summer through the fall. Master Gardener Phyllis Sturges will discuss the vegetable varieties that do best when started mid to late summer, soil preparation, fertilizer needs, and winning container combinations. Preparing for West Nile Virus
West Nile Virus has barely arrived in Washington state. This is the summer to begin taking precautions for yourself, your family and pets, advises the staff at the University of Washington's Center for Urban Horticulture. The center will offer a class on how to do just that on Wednesday, July 16, from 7-8:30 p.m. Sharon Collman, IPM coordinator for EPA Region 10, will share the basics of mosquito biology and control, and provide common-sense tips on preparing your home and garden as well as your family for what's to come.
