Laurelhurst group stays vigilant

The Laurelhurst Community Council, led by president Jeannie Hale, is known for its outspoken views. Whether it's regarding new development projects or a "dangerous dog" ordinance, the citizens group can be counted on to make its voice heard. At the council's April's meeting, Dr. William Callahan, a veterinarian for 30 years at Union Bay Veterinarian Clinic, briefed members on Seattle's Animal Control Code Review Panel's proposed changes to City regulations concerning dangerous dogs. Hale said the council will likely draft a letter opposing a provision of the proposed changes that would narrow the criteria defining a potentially violent dog. Under the proposed rules, said Hale, a dog would have to severely maul a human to trigger exile of euthanasia. Current rules give a broader definition of "dangerous dogs." The council meets the second Monday of every month at 7 p.m., at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 4805 NE 45th St. In May, the group will discuss a new traffic signal at NE 50th Street and Sand Point Way.
