Wallingford garden tour

Ever wanted to poke around the neighborhood's nicer gardens without being mistaken for a prowler? The Wallingford Garden Tour on Saturday, May 31, is your chance. Ten home gardens will be on display, as well as a Seattle Tilth demonstration garden at the Good Shepherd Center. The tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Wallingford Garden Spot or Piriformis Nursery. Proceeds benefit the Wallingford Neighborhood Office, which houses the Wallingford Community Council, Chamber of Commerce and WEaving Wallingford. For details, call Jennifer Veninga at 634-2706.

Maple Leaf to get P-Patch

Maple Leaf residents are closer to getting a community garden. In April, the City signed an agreement with heirs of the owner of a vacant lot on NE 103rd, just east of 5th Avenue NE. The City expects to purchase the 16,000-square-foot property by August with money from a Neighborhood Matching Grant, a Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Grant, the King County Conservation Futures Fund and $21,000 in private donations.

City Council member Richard Conlin said City staff worked hard to purchase the site, particularly Deirdre Grace of the Department of Neighborhoods and Lise Ward of the Parks Department.
