Joe Jencks to perform at Phinney
By CLAYTON PARKThe Seattle Folklore Society will host a performance by folksinger Joe Jencks at the Phinney Neighborhood Center on Saturday, April 19. The SFS compares the young songwriter to such folk music luminaries as Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Utah Phillips. "There are lots of good singer-songwriters," notes a press release from the SFS, "but what sets Joe apart is his knack for delivering anthems for ordinary folks songs that uplift and uphold us in our struggles. A Joe Jencks concert is definitely not a visit to the inner world of some buy with a guitar who would like us all to sit still and listen politely. It's an occasion for singing, a contagious rising up of voices, an act of joy and defiance." In these troubling times, that sounds like just what the doctor ordered. Samples of Jencks' music can be heard online at www.joejencks.com. To reserve seats for his performance at the Phinney Neighborhood Center, visit the SFS Web site at www.seafolklore.org or call 528-8523. The concert begins at 8 p.m. The center is located at 6532 Phinney Ave. N. Tickets are $12, with $2 off for SFS and Phinney Neighborhood Association members and seniors. Kids pay half price.
