Credits roll for Latsios

George Latsios, founder and former owner of Scarecrow Video at 5030 Roosevelt Way NE in the University District, passed away March 5 in Kozani, Greece. He was 44.

Latsios and his then-wife, Rebecca Soriano, started Scarecrow in 1988 with their private video collection. Eventually, their store grew to become one of the largest video stores in the country, with sales sometimes exceeding $1 million.

In 1995, doctors discovered a tumor in Latsios' brain. Two years later, Scarecrow declared bankruptcy. Latsios retired in 1999, selling the store to John Dauphiny and Carl Tostevin and returning to his native Greece. He is survived by his ex-wife, Soriano, and his mother, Katina.

A memorial event will be held at 8 p.m., March 30 at Scarecrow Video.
