Land Use Column

By CLAYTON PARK

New auditorium for Hale

The City's Department of Neighborhoods held a meeting on March 25 to take public comments regarding proposed departures to the land-use zoning requirements for the Meadowbrook neighborhood to allow a new auditorium to be built at Nathan Hale High School. The new auditorium would seat up to 430 people and would replace an existing auditorium, which only seats 100.

According to the Department of Design, Construction and Land Use (DCLU), the school is asking to be exempted from zoning requirements which call for creating 50 on-site parking spaces (the school wants to add fewer spaces) and a maximum building height of 35 feet (the school wants to raise the height limit to 65 feet).

Some neighbors' views may be impacted by the taller building. The school might also need a zoning variance to continue its current practice of loading and unloading buses in the street.

For details, call Ovid Thompson of the Department of Neighborhoods at 684-0607.
