Coping with memory loss?

A peer group is forming in North Seattle for those experiencing early symptoms progressive memory loss problems such as Alzheimer's disease. Beginning in March, the group will meet in nine weekly sessions to learn strategies for managing day-to-day life, how to cope with changes in relationships and build self-esteem. At the same time, family members or companions will meet nearby.

The sessions are sponsored by The Alzheimer's Association, Elderhealth Northwest, Seattle/King County Senior Services and Northshore Adult Day Programs. Organizers stress that those participating should be aware of their memory loss and be able to discuss it. Preregistration is required.

Senior volunteer program

The King County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is offering a number of volunteer opportunities for anyone 55 years or older who wants to work with children or teens. Volunteers can tutor and teach English-as-a-Second-Language classes at the Meadowbrook Family Center, work in a classroom at the SPICE Intergenerational Center in Ballard or assist in Power of One's school support program in Shoreline. RSVP, which is sponsored by the Fremont Public Association, screens the volunteer positions to make sure volunteers with get training and support when working with children.
