Local youth serves as page

Kate MacFarlane, a youth from the Haller Lake neighborhood, recently completed a one-week stint in Olympia as a page to State Sen. Ken Jacobsen, who represents Northeast Seattle.

MacFarlane, 14, is a ninth grader at University Preparatory School in the Wedgwood area.

She said her experience as a Senate page was both "cool" and "interesting." She especially enjoyed the "behind the scenes" look of the state Senate.

"You go down for a week and basically run errands for different senators," she said. "The senators were mostly really friendly."

The one downside, she said, was the outfits black pants and top that the 50 or so House and Senate pages must wear.

"A lot of times it was really funny, because i didn't know my way around the (state) capital, and people would come up and ask me for directions anyway because of the uniform," she said.

MacFarlane, the daughter of Ross and Lisa MacFarlane, is also a member of the Seattle Girls Choir. She enjoys history and politics in school, as well as skiing, scuba diving, swimming and reading.
