Mayor honors scholar students

Mayor Greg Nickels honored 15 middle school students from throughout the city, including four from North Seattle, for both outstanding scholastic achievements and community service, at a Scholars Awards Ceremony Dec. 10. The North Seattle winners are Laura Gough, an 8th grader at Whitman Middle School; Melody Hirsch, an 8th grader at Ballard's Salmon Bay School; Carlos Rufin, an 8th grader at Whitman Middle School; and Claire Smith, an 8th grader at Eckstein Middle School. They each received a Mayors' Scholars letterman's jacket and $500 to contribute to the charity of their choice, or to further their education.

Kiwanis aids school

The Northgate-Lake City Kiwanis continued a longstanding tradition of helping the Northwest School for Hearing Impaired Children by presenting school co-director Judy Callahan with a $600 donation check at the group's Dec. 3 luncheon.

The school serves 60 hearing impaired children from five different counties, including Seattle School District students.

"I cannot express how grateful we are to Kiwanis Clubs," says Callahan, who founded the school 21 years ago with co-director Karen Appelman. The nonprofit school relies on private donations for about 30 percent of its $1 million annual budget.

Over the life of the school, both the Northgate-Lake City Kiwanis and the University Kiwanis have been generous donors, says Callahan. "Those two clubs have funded us and helped us in all the years we've been in existence," she says.

The check was presented by club President Madeline Childers. The money was raised by members through selling entertainment coupon books and selling mixed nuts.

The next Northgate-Lake City Kiwanis fundraiser is a bowling tournament, set for March 1, 1 p.m. at Greenwood's Leilani Lanes. For more information on the tournament, call 524-2135 ext. 146.
