Phinney Winterfest
By LEAH WEATHERSBY
The Phinney Neighborhood Association will celebrate the holidays by holding its 22nd annual Winter Festival and Crafts Fair on Saturday, Dec. 7, and Sunday, Dec. 8. About 4,000 people are expected to turn out for this year's festival, which will take place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. each day at the Phinney Neighborhood Center. About 115 crafts vendors, selling everything from vintage-style hats and handmade jewelry to contemporary garden art, will be on hand for this year's Winter Fest. Of course, there are also crafts of a more unusual type, including faux stamps by David Young, an artist who lives in the Wedgwood neighborhood. Young makes his art stamps (which are not meant to be confused with the real thing) by using images from local neighborhoods. He taught himself the technique by taking advantage of Seattle Public Library computers. With so many choices, Winter Festival visitors may want to rest a spell before making their final purchases. That's where the entertainment comes in. More than 20 different live acts will appear at the festival, including such diverse performers as jazz duet Cool A Roo (Saturday, 2 p.m., on the Blue Building stage), Batucada, a Brazilian music group, (Sunday, 3:30 p.m., on the Brick Building stage) and Elizabethan performers Blood, Love and Rhetoric (Sunday,11:45 a.m., on the Blue Building stage). And if Blood, Love and Rhetoric makes you hungry never fear refreshments will be readily available. In addition to three bake sales, chili from PCC will be served and a variety of lunch items prepared by Uncle Roy's Catering. After noshing, parents can take the wee ones for a photo with Frosty the Snowman a PNA tradition! Of course, the Winter Festival does not exist solely for your amusement. Without this event, the nonprofit PNA might not be able to support two soup kitchens, before- and after-school child care programs, two preschool cooperatives, a neighborhood art gallery, a tool-lending service, food banks, and host of other programs. This year's festival is expected to raise $30,000. This year's Winter Festival sponsors include PCC Natural Markets, KUOW Radio, Red Mill Burgers, Fred Meyer, Nowogroski Rupp Insurance Associates, Greenwood Market, Starbucks Coffee, McCallum Print Group and the Seattle Sun.
