Ravenna Creek update

Four new design options for daylighting Ravenna Creek at Ravenna Park were recently unveiled by the Seattle Parks & Recreation Department.

Daylighting the creek at the park has proved challenging because there is currently a baseball field in the area where part of the creek would flow.

None of the proposed designs have the approval of the Ravenna Creek Alliance, a group which has spent years working to get the creek daylighted.

Kit O'Neill, president of the alliance, said his group would like to see the creation of a fifth design that would remove the ball field from the park altogether, leaving more room for daylighting and preserving open space.

That isn't an option the Parks Department is considering. In June, the department unveiled a plan that would move the ball field to an area in the park that is currently an open space.

The Parks Board will recommend one of the designs at its Sept. 26 meeting. Parks Superintendent Ken Bounds will make the final decision on which design will be used. Construction is expected to begin in 2003. For details, call the department at 233-7936.
