Fremont Bridge update

The Seattle Department of Transportation will host an open house to discuss rebuilding the approaches to the Fremont Bridge on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 5-8 p.m. at the B.F. Day Elementary School gymnasium at 3921 Linden Ave. N.

According to SDOT, the 85-year-old approaches the elevated roadway structures leading to the bridge have deteriorated with age and don't meet the City's current standards for withstanding a major earthquake.

A project to rebuild the bridge approaches is scheduled to begin in 2005. Suggestions from local residents and shopkeepers include shutting down the entire bridge during construction, shutting down one side at a time, or a third option which would rebuild the bottom parts of the approaches first, waiting to close the bridge for the longest possible time.

For details, call SDOT project manager Rob Gorman at 233-7205.
