Greenwood gets crosswalk back

Greenwood residents and shopkeepers cheered the restoration on Oct. 2 of a crosswalk. as well as the addition of a traffic light, along N. 85th Street, where the busy thoroughfare intersects with Palatine Avenue.

The Seattle Department of Transportation initially removed the crosswalk this past summer, prompting cries of protest from the community. The department explained it did so because it considered the crosswalk to be unsafe because it gave pedestrians a false sense of security. Over the past eight years, the intersection had been the scene of 10 accidents involving pedestrians.

In restoring the crosswalk, the department decided to also install a traffic light to improve public safety.
