Healthy Living BriefsGreen Lake candle-lightingThe Western Washington State Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association will promote the fact that November is National Alzheimer's Awareness Month by holding a candle-lighting event at Green Lake on Sunday, Nov. 3. The event, which begins at 4:45 p.m., will be held at the community center, located at 7634 E. Greenlake Drive N. The event is free and open to the public with candles provided. Today, there are 100,000 men and women living with Alzheimer's disease in Washington state, according to the association. "Until a cure or means of halting Alzheimer's is in place, our challenge with continue to grow with an ever-aging population," the group states. Curling club begins 42nd seasonThe Granite Curling Club in the Haller Lake neighborhood kicked off its 42nd season with an open house in October. League play commenced Oct. 21. Located at 1440 N 128th St., the club is the only facility dedicated to curling on the West Coast. Home of the 2002 U.S. Mixed Champions, and the 2001 U.S. Men's National Champions, the Granite Curling Club has won more national titles than any curling club in the United States. Due to the increased exposure of curling in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, the club has seen a surge in membership. and has added several new leagues, including a mixed league on Sunday nights, a novice league on Thursday nights, and a Saturday drop-in league. Cost for the drop-in league is $5 per person. Leagues are held each weeknight except Saturday. Daytime leagues are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday. With members ranging from age 8 to 92, the club offers leagues to suit every interest and ability. The club is also available for group rentals. To contact the club, call 362-2446.
Time for flu shotsFamily Care of Northgate, at 301 NE 100th, annouced it is ready to begin administering flu shots. People with asthma and other high-risk groups such as adults and children with heart, kidney and lung conditions, and the elderly are urged by the American Lung Association to get a flu shot in either October or November. For everyone else, the vaccine is considered optional. Each year, more people die of complications from the flu than from any other vaccine-preventable disease. Vaccination protection lasts approximately six months. Flu shots cost $12.50. For more information, call 525-8200. | ||
