LAND USE

By CLAYTON PARK

Ravenna project proposed

DCLU held a design review board meeting on Aug. 19 at Eckstein Middle School to hear a developer's preliminary plans to build a mixed-use complex at Saxe Floral & Greenhouses property at 2402 NE 65th St.

The project would include a four-story building that would have ground-floor retail and 34 apartment units, as well as eight separate buildings containing a combined total of 25 townhouse units and eight apartment units. Parking for 90 cars would be provided within the structures.

Saxe Floral owner Nancy Javete said she hopes to find a site to temporarily house her business while the new building is being constructed. The new complex is being developed by the Javete family in partnership with real estate developer Lorig Associates (whose other notable projects in North Seattle have included the Wallingford Center and the Lake City Professional Center). Nancy Javete's son, Harold Javete, works for Lorig Associates. Nancy Javete's late husband Lou Javete (who died three years ago) purchased Saxe Floral from Nettie Saxe, the widow of the original owner, 36 years ago. The business has been an institution in the Ravenna neighborhood for more than half a century.

The plans for the new complex call for the inclusion of a floral shop.

Phinney project greenlighted

A master use permit was granted on Aug. 8 for future construction of a four-story building at 6009 Phinney Ave. N, which is currently the site of the Woodland Park Inn restaurant. The project would include 3,700 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor, 32 residential units (five on the ground floor and 27 on the upper floors), and parking for 42 cars. The building that currently houses the Woodland Park Inn will be demolished to make way for the new building.

Woodland Park Inn owner Louie Apostolou said he plans to keep his restaurant open until at least the fall of next year and hasn't yet started looking for a new location.

Stone Way QFC update

Quality Food Centers has submitted a master use permit application to build a 35,000-square-foot QFC grocery store on the site of the former Stone Way Safeway store at 3920 Stone Way N. The project would include 26 residential units above the store and parking for 156 cars. The old Safeway building that is located on the property would be demolished to make way for the project. The developer would also need to obtain several additional permits, including a building permit, sign permit, street use permit and PSCAA permit, as well as approval of a study regarding environmental impacts and design review approval before it can begin construction of the project. Apartment project permitted

DCLU granted a master use permit on Aug. 5 for a proposed apartment building at 5110 40th Ave. NE. An existing structure will be demolished to make way for construction of the two-story, 10-unit apartment building. Parking for 12 cars will be provided on a neighboring property. The 54,693-square-foot building would include parking for 60 cars in an underground garage. Existing structures on the property would be demolished to make way for the project.
