Lake City Library design unveiled

A design for the Lake City Library expansion was presented at a public open house on July 31. The project will expand the 9,000-square-foot library to 15,000 square feet. The library was originally built in 1965.

The expanded library will be part of a municipal center, which will also include a new neighborhood service center (aka Lake City Little City Hall), community center, parking garage and Albert Davis Park.

Douglas Bailey, project manager for the Seattle Public Library, said the expansion project is now moving into the final planning phase where the details of the design are hammered out. Amenities being considered include a sculptural glass parking garage entrance cover or, alternatively, a bench wall at the garage entrance. Neighbors have expressed concerns that a glass cover might block sight lines to the park in addition to being a potential target for vandals.

The municipal center is expected to open in 2004. No decision has been made yet on what will happen to the current Lake City Little City Hall building at 12707 30th Ave. NE. The Lake City Library is located at 12501 28th Ave. NE.

Principal Robert Radford said now that the school is back in its old neighborhood, in a revitalized building with a new curriculum, enrollment is already up to 260 students - 40 more than last year.
