Cathy's Lounge in Greenwood

Cathy's Lounge, a new restaurant at 8415 Greenwood Ave., opened in June. Owners Cathy and Keith Green recently moved to Seattle from San Francisco, where she worked in marketing for a computer company and he worked in sales for trade shows. Keith is a native of Whidbey Island. Cathy lived in Washington briefly in the early 1990s. The Greens loved the area and wanted to move back, but because the Seattle job market is tight they decided to open their own business. They chose their location because it is close to their Greenwood home and along a bus line. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch.

Crew Cuts opens in Lake City

Crew Cuts, a full-service salon for men, women and children, opened its doors at 3018 NE 125th in Lake City in August. Owner Van Tran is a Kirkland resident who has worked as a stylist in several salons throughout Greater Seattle. She said she chose to open her business in Lake City because it is a high-traffic area, near bus stops and high-density residential buildings. Tran recruited her sister, Linh Tran, to work as a manicurist in the shop, and her friends, Huong Nguyen, Hong Nguyen and Julie Trinh to be stylists.

Annie's Nannies expands service

Annie's Nannies, a nanny-placement business in Ballard, has expanded its services to include on-call companions and housekeepers. Owners Suzanne Royer-McCone and Annie Davis say the companions are available to help elderly customers with errands and other non-medical services. Annie's Nannies is located at 2236 NW 58th St., Suite 101.

Bogan named new R.J.Reynolds executive

Richard H. Bogan, a native of North Seattle, was appointed executive vice president and chief financial officer of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings Inc. in July. Bogan grew up in the Sand Point area and attended Roosvelt High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington. Bogan is the former president of North American Logistics, an operating company of Allied Worldwide Inc.

R.J. Reynolds is based in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Northgate North adds Quizno's

In July, a Quizno's sandwich shop opened its doors at the Northgate North shopping center located along Northgate Way, just west of 5th Avenue NE. The restaurant's franchise owner is Minh Le, a Sammamish resident who chose the Northgate location because the area's high foot traffic.

Rusty Pelican in Wallingford

The Rusty Pelican Cafe, a restaurant that serves American and Northwest cuisine, opened in Wallingford on July 15. The new eatery replaces Nikolas restaurant, which had occupied the space at 1924 N. 45th St. since the early 1990s. Peter and Marilyn Limberopoulos, the husband-and-wife teams that owns The Rusty Pelican, moved to Seattle from Illinois two years ago because they preferred a warmer climate and had friends in the area. Having owned a restaurant in the Midwest for 35 years, Peter Limberopoulos started looking for a location here where he could open a new eatery. Although he originally planned to open a Greek restaurant, he agreed when purchasing Nikolas not to compete with Costas Opa in Fremont, whose owner also ran Nikolas.

San Marco in Maple Leaf

Theresa Dzwonkowski and her husband, Brian Short, recently celebrated the six-month anniversary of their new business: the San Marco Grocery in Maple Leaf.

The store's location, at 8416 5th Ave. NE, has been home to several groceries since 1951. But Dzwonkowski said over the last decade or two and a long succession of owners, the place had taken a downward slide.

The couple said their intention was to turn the store into something like what longtime residents of the community remembered it to be: a nice place, where parents wouldn't hesitate to send their kids.

The couple, who have traveled extensively throughout Europe, named their store after the San Marco Piazza in Venice, Italy.

Although the Sept. 11 attacks happened shortly before the couple purchased the business, they decided to go ahead with the venture and spent months renovating the property before opening in February.

"We're happy that we did it," said Short. "We feel we're a vital part of the community."

Rekhi building finally fills anchor tenant space

After months of anticipation, a Subway sandwich shop opened in May at 12500 Lake City Way NE, on the ground floor of the newly completed Rekhi Building.

The space was originally slated for a Tulleys coffee shop. Tulleys backed out of the deal after suffering corporate losses last year.

The Subway shop is a franchise owned by Rob O'Brien, 25, a Rekhi Building resident who recently moved into an apartment unit above the Subway shop in order to be close to his business.

Previously, O'Brien worked as an estimator for an auto body repair shop in Bellevue. He also worked at several different restaurants when he was a high school student.

O'Brien said after deciding to open a restaurant of his own, he researched different franchises before deciding on Subway. When the company told him that the Lake City location was available after another Subway franchise operator backed out, he jumped at the opportunity.

"I was totally excited," O'Brien said.
