Fremont Baptist to show silent film

By JUDY CLARRIDGE

Suspense, action, horror and organ music.

It's the 1925 silent film, "Phantom of the Opera," starring Lon Chaney Sr., "the man of a thousand faces." It is said to be the definitive film version of a classic monster fable that sound, technology, and time have yet to top.

The film will be shown on Friday, Aug. 2, 7:30 p.m. at Fremont Baptist Church, 717 N. 36th. Accompanying the hour-long version of the film, will be noted theater organist Andy Crow, who will perform a new score that he has composed for the movie. Crow lives in Olympia and travels nationwide to accompany silent film presentations.

This may not be the first time that the church's 1917 Estey organ has been used to accompany this film. It was the theater organ in a Bremerton movie theater in 1927 when the church purchased it. That year was significant because it saw the full-scale introduction of talkies and movie theaters everywhere were rushing to divest themselves of suddenly obsolete organs.

Popcorn will be available during the film and ice cream will be served at the end of the performance. Admission is free. Donations of non-perishable food items for the Fremont Food Bank are appreciated.
