History House chronicles past

Through the summer, History House will present several winning displays created by Washington State junior high and high school students who participated in the 2002 regional and state History Day competitions. Last year's junior level national champion display is also available for viewing. It was created on the theme of Rosie the Riveter (a reference to women who worked in factories during World War II) by students from Vashon Island.

Other current exhibits include computerized displays of early sports and theaters in Seattle, presentations on city halls, Playland, B.F. Day Elementary School and several panels with information on Seattle's sesquicentennial.

History House is located at 790 N. 34th St. For details, call 675-8875.

Putting Ballard history on the web

Spending hours at local archives searching for historic photos may soon be a thing of the past - at least for those who are primarily interested in old Ballard.

The Ballard Historical Society is poised to create an online archive of its photo collection. Over the years, the group has accumulated more than 500 photographs, many over 80 years old. Previously, the photos were cataloged using the old-fashioned pen and paper method. However, Mary Fortino, president of the society, said that they hope their web archive will be up by late this year or early next year.

The Ballard Historical Society has already received a $1,500 technology grant from King County to purchase a computer and software for the project. However, fundraising and calls for volunteers continue. For details, call 706-9236 or e-mail ballardhistoricalsociety@msn.com

Laurelhurst Elementary to turn 75

In September, Laurelhurst Elementary will celebrate its 75th anniversary with an All-School Reunion.

Although the Laurelhurst school's first permanent building (located at 4530 46th Ave. NE) opened in 1928, neighborhood children had been taught in portable school buildings since 1916. In those days, one room served several grades, but the school has grown - 401 students were enrolled at Laurelhurst last year.

The Friends of Laurelhurst School Foundation is sponsoring the All-School Reunion at Laurelhurst which will be held on Friday, Sept. 20, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The program will include live jazz and a tour of the school. Tickets to the event are $25 and orders may be mailed to: Friends of Laurelhurst School Foundation, 4603 N.E. University Village #406, Seattle, WA 98105. For details, call 394-6263.
