Fremont Baptist to hold concert, art show

By CLAYTON PARK

A concert featuring tunes from the musical ³Grease² and an art show of scenes from an old Wild West ghost town ... in a church?

Why not? Especially if that church is Fremont Baptist, which is located in a community known for its thriving arts scene.

³Itıs a celebration of creativity,² said Judie Clarridge, a member of Fremont Baptistıs outreach community, in explaining the churchıs upcoming semi-annual concert, which will be held Friday, June 7, and its art show by artist Gary L. Jackson, which will be held throughout the month of June in the Sophie Wrenchey Gallery, located in the churchıs front lobby. ³We believe that creativity is a gift from God and can be expressed in a variety of different media.²

In addition to selected numbers from "Grease" performed by the Broadway Bound Children's Theatre, the concert at Fremont Baptist which begins at 7:30 p.m., will feature traditional folk music by the Norwegian Ladies Chorus, under the direction of Julie Schmidt, as well as a performance by the Fremont Baptist choir.

Broadway Bound is a nonprofit youth theater group that rehearses at Fremont Baptist. The student actors, who come from all over the city, are responsible for the full production of two Broadway-style musicals each year.

Refreshments will be served. Although admission to the concert is free, a donation of non-perishable food items for the Fremont Food Bank is requested.

The art exhibit is a series of photolithographs by Jackson that he has titled, "Ghost Towns of the West."

The pieces started out as photographs of an old mining town called Bodie, Calif., which the artist then transferred onto watercolor paper through the use of polyester plates. The result, said Clarridge, are prints that look like a cross between photos and paintings. ³It creates a weathered effect,² which makes the images look like photos in soft focus, she said.

Clarridge said Fremont Baptist members also plan to operate a booth at this yearıs Fremont Fair where church volunteers will hand out free coffee and lemonade to fairgoers. The booth will also accept donations, all of which will be given to the Fremont Food Bank. Fremont Baptist has manned a booth at the event every year since the fair began.

³Itıs another way to try to interact with the community, whether through arts endeavors or the booth,² said Clarridge. ³Itıs all part of our community outreach efforts.²
