New play to debut at Empty Space

The Empty Space Theatre concludes its 32nd mainstage season with the world premiere of "G-d Doesn't Pay Rent Here," a play by Kate Moira Ryan and Judy Gold. Empty Space Artistic Director Allison Narver will direct the show, which runs from June 5-30.

Gold is perhaps best known for her television work: "Comedy Central Presents: Judy Gold" and "At the Multiplex With Judy Gold" on HBO. Gold stars in Empty Space's production of "G-d Doesn't Pay Rent Here," which is described as a one-woman show, about the myths and meanings of being a Jewish mother.

SAFA holds art exhibition

The Seattle Academy of Fine Art (SAFA) will host an exhibition of student works at University Heights Center, Friday, June 14, through Sunday, June 16. The show will take place on the second floor.

An opening night party will be held Friday, from 6-10 p.m. Refreshments will be served. There will also be a silent auction of faculty art work to benefit the school. Admission to the party is $10.

Artwork will also be on display at the school, from 10 a.m-5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday. There is no admission charge for those days.

The student exhibition will be juried by a professional artist and prizes will be awarded. The "Best of Show" winner will move on to Seattle's Town Hall for a month of public viewing.

New market opens in U-District

A new Sunday market will make its debut in North Seattle on June 2: the University District Community Market.

The market will offer crafts venders as well as a flea market and will be located at the University Heights Center, 5031 University Way NE - the same location as the U-District's Saturday Farmer's Market.

The University District Community Market will run every Sunday through Sept. 15, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission for shoppers is free.

The new market is a project of the University Heights Center and will act as a source of revenue for the nonprofit organization. For details, call 527-4278.

Latin dance in June

On Saturday, June 1, Living Traditions Dance will present a salsa dance with live Cuban music by Yerba Buena. A workshop in salsa basics will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Leif Erikson Lodge Ballroom, 2245 NW 57th St. in Ballard. It will be followed by the dance, which will take place at the same location, beginning at 8:30 p.m. and running until midnight. The fee for the workshop is $6. Admission to the dance is $11. Lake City concert series planned

A series of three outdoor concerts will be held throughout the summer at Lake City Mini Park, located on the southwest corner of NE 125th and Lake City Way NE, beginning Friday, June 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The concert series is being sponsored by the Seattle Sun newspaper as part of its fifth year anniversary. Veteran concert promoter Pete English of PEP Productions (633-4828 ext. 2) will select the performers for the concert series. Future dates are not yet scheduled.

Bring a bagged lunch or purchase one from area restaurants. Free soft drinks will be provided. The three concerts will be just a small part of several festivities planned as part of an effort to help revitalize the Lake City Mini Park.

Heading the effort are the Lake City Chamber of Commerce, Lake City Task Force, and the City of Seattle.

Other organizations are planning similar events. On Friday, June 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., the public is invited to come and play a game of chess or checkers.
