As a Wallingford resident, I wanted to respond to recent acceptance of monies from the Mariners for an improved ballpark at Lower Woodland Park. Apparently they are searching for a name. I have chosen "Sleepless in Seattle" as my neighbors and I expect to be with the increased field lighting that is planned.
There are a growing number of residents who feel that the notification process for comment on the project was not completed to the level claimed by the City in their SEPA documentation. I have found it difficult to find anyone who says they were notified prior to these past few months about the project.
The fact is that the resulting increased light from the park will be a direct legal taking, by way of light trespass, of property value from this neighborhood. The SEPA document does not mitigate park neighbors for this trespass. Additionally, a separate and as-of-yet incomplete study being done by the City's transportation department regarding Green Lake traffic has not been accounted for in the Woodland Park decisions. I imagine that neighbors will be additionally affected by the incidents of noise and congestion.
I feel sorry for the poor souls who live directly off the park. Their lives and the lives of their children will be affected for years to come by the disturbing incidents of continuous and high volume light. I live on Wallingford Avenue N. and light from the park's existing soccer lights light up the entire top floor of my house. One light in particular is piercing as it is directed my way. I can only imagine what it must already do to neighbors living adjacent to the park.
Thank you for your attention to our community matters. We have a Web site set up for comments at www.seattledot.net/woodland.
