ON THE CASE: How to remove moss from a roof

By STEVE WILLIAMS

Q: For the first time since I installed a new roof five years ago, my roof is growing moss. My neighbors are experiencing the same problem, so I think weather conditions must have been ripe this winter. I live in the Thornton Creek watershed, so I'm concerned about using chemicals. What can I do to remove the moss?

- BARBARA, Pinehurst

A: Moss can be removed very simply and easily without harming the environment. There are three possible solutions; first, sprinkle everyday granular detergent on the moss, secondly, standard moss control products for your yard will work well as they are deigned to kill the moss without harming other plants; and third, lightly pressure washing will remove the moss. Once you have removed the moss, you can help to prevent it's return by installing a strip of zinc along the ridge of your roof.
