A Second Hand and Baked Goods Sale is scheduled for Saturday, May 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Thirteenth Church of Christ, Scientist on the northeast corner of NE 125th and 35th Avenue NE in Lake City.
All proceeds from the sale will go to support the completion of the improvements to the new park located at 14043 32nd Ave. NE, behind the old Carl North recreational vehicle sales center, where a children's play area was completed in July 2000.
A great variety of items have been donated, ranging from wet/vac machines and chairs to toys and plants. There must be something for everybody and we are still taking donated items. If you are doing some spring cleaning and want to contribute to the cause, call me at 367-4635 to arrange for pick up or drop off.
Neighbors of the park have long wanted to restore the lost habitat that once attracted a great variety of songbirds. They also expressed a desire to have a walking path through the restored habitat area for access to bird-watching. As an added feature, water will be diverted from Little Brook to form a small creeklet flowing into and out of the southwest corner to provide the ultimate bird sanctuary, landscape feature and educational opportunity for students from the nearby Olympic Hills Elementary School.
Seattle Kiwanis Sunrisers, Thornton Creek Alliance, Earthcorps and neighbors of the park have teamed up to sponsor the project. They were awarded a Seattle Neighborhood Matching Grant to complete the improvements and expect to start construction this summer. Construction will take place in stages as weather permits. The goal is to complete the project by the fall of 2003.
The Second Hand and Baked Goods Sale on May 25 will also feature educational displays about habitat restoration and native plants as well as information about the sponsoring organizations including the Christian Scientists. Come meet the neighbors and service organizations in your community. Find some good buys. While you are there, pick up some breads and desserts for your family or next gathering. It's a spring event and a way for you to support an environmentally friendly, community pride-building project.
