LAND USE: Light poles at Jane Addams, Hale

By CLAYTON PARK

Light poles at Jane Addams, Hale

Master-use permit applications have been submitted by the Seattle Public Schools District to install eight 73-foot-tall light poles around the existing athletic field at the former Jane Addams Middle School and 12 light poles, ranging in height from 82-95 feet, around the existing athletic field across the street at Nathan Hale High School. All of the light poles would have shielded flood lights.

The fields, which are currently unlighted, are used by Seattle Public Schools and Seattle Parks & Recreation for recreational sports activities. The Cityıs Department of Design, Construction and Land Use, which is reviewing the applications, would need to grant a special exception to allow the poles to exceed the 30-foot height limit in a single-family residential zone.

³Weıre shooting to get the lights installed this year but it depends on when we get the permit,² said Gene Tompkins of Waldron Akira Architects, which has been hired by the School District for the project.

The field lighting projects have drawn opposition from neighbors. Jane Addams is located at 11051 34th Ave. NE. Nathan Hale is located at 10750 30th Ave. NE.

Paul Smith, the head of school at University Child Development, said the new building would enable the private nonprofit school to consolidate its operations. Currently, the school has 200 students, grades 1-5, at its main building, and 97 preschool students, ages 3-5, at a temporary site in Fremont.

University Child Development was established in 1911 as the lab school for the University of Washington. It moved off the UW campus in 1981, and has been at its current site (the former Blessed Sacrament School building) since 1990. Smith said the school plans to begin construction of the new building this summer, which would be ready for occupancy by the fall of 2003.
