LIVE FROM NORTH SEATTLE: Music entertainment offerings abound in area clubs

By LEAH WEATHERSBY

Ever hear the joke: "I like both kinds of music, country AND western"?

On Sat., Feb. 23, The Fiddler's Inn will treat music fans to both - and neither - at the same time.

The featured performers that night will be a band called Country Dave & Western Dave who actually play a brand of music that is none of the above: acid-punk. Admission is $2.

The Fiddler's Inn, located at 9219 35th Ave. NE, also offers free open mic nights on Mondays. To sign up to perform, musicians should call the club on Monday morning at 525-0752.

If you're looking for an authentic country and western atmosphere but don't know any of those fancy country line-dance moves, the Little Red Hen, located at 7115 Woodlawn Ave. NE, offers free country dancing lessons, from 8 to 9 p.m., on Sundays and Tuesdays. The club's regular performers include Jerry & The PhilBillys who play on Sunday nights and Tommy Westley with Don Kellogg who play on Tuesday nights. The club also features an assortment of country music bands on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Ivan, a rock band that won the Lake City Pioneer Days Festival's 2000 Battle of the Bands (and which returned to perform in a non-competitive setting in last summer's Pioneer Days event), will perform with Victim By Design and Monotone Pictures on Friday, Feb. 15 at Tommy's Nightclub, located at 4552 University Way NE. Admission is $6.

Every Sunday in February, the Rain Dancer, located at 4217 University Way NE, features live karaoke with (the appropriately named) Run For Cover. The cover charge - no pun intended - is $2.

The Scarlet Tree, located at 6521 Roosevelt Way NE, will also kick off the month of February in funky way with Kool Aid, which will perform Friday, Feb. 1. Music begins at 9 p.m. Admission is $7.

The Redhook Ale Brewery Trolleyman Pub, located at 3400 Phinney Ave N, will feature three funky Friday nights in February. Freestyle Candela's (roots grove funk) performs Feb. 1, followed by BeeCraft (original psycho funk) on Feb. 15, and the Atomic Players on Feb. 22. Performances begin after 9 p.m. There is no cover charge.

On Valentine's Day (Thursday, Feb. 14 for the bad boyfriends out there), The Tractor, located at 5213 Ballard Avenue NW, will host a benefit for the Teenage Pregnancy and Parenting Program. Jo Miller & The Burly Roughnecks, The Donettes, MSW Band and the Roy Kay Trio will perform, starting at 9 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the door.

In Ballard, you can get your fishing bait and your groove on at The Baithouse Cafe, located at 5517 Seaview Ave NW. The cafe will feature over 10 nights of jazz performances (starting at 8 p.m.) and jam sessions (starting at 7:30 p.m.) in February.

Traditional Irish is the name of the game at Ballard's Conor Byrne Pub, located at 5140 Ballard Ave. NW, with the Suffering Gaels on Feb. 8, Clay Pipe on Feb. 9 and Skip 'n' Finn on Feb. 15. Most performances will only set you back a few pounds.

Bad Albert's Tap & Grill, located at 5100 Ballard Ave. NW, will feature blues every Thursday, throughout the month of February. Performances run from 8-10:30 p.m. and there is no cover charge.
