If Noah Oldham, manager of the Olive Branch deli and grocery in Maple Leaf, has his way, the name of his work place will be very apt indeed.

The Olive Branch's walls are decorated with pieces of both Jewish and Islamic culture like an Islamic prayer rug and posters promoting Israel. The deli's menu, which includes an array of Mediterranean dishes, blends the two cultures as well as the decor.

A few months ago a Jewish customer said to Oldham, "the only people who like Middle Eastern food more than Arabs are Jews."

That gave Oldham the idea of having the deli host interfaith dinners that could bring Jews and Muslims together to talk about their similarities and reach out through non-political discussions.

Oldham's idea received encouragement from customer Rabbi Ted Falcon, who leads the Bet Alef Meditative Synagogue, which has an office only a few blocks from the deli.

Falcon said most of the interfaith events following the Sept. 11 attacks have been led by religious leaders. "This is an attempt to begin a less formal community response," Falcon said of the Olive Branch's dinner series.

The first interfaith dinner took place in October. Oldham hopes to eventually offer one every Sunday, depending on interest. Members of all faiths are welcome. In addition to offering different religious communities a chance to share ideas, he also hopes to promote the deli, which is owned by Mohamed Souaiaia, a Tunisian who renamed the deli (from the Medina Grocery) four months ago.

As for Oldham himself, he's neither a Muslim or a Jew - just a guy who hopes cuisine can bring people together. "My religion is food," said Oldham.

The Olive Branch is located at 1421 NE 80th St. The next interfaith dinners are scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 28, and Sunday, Nov. 4, at 6 p.m. both nights. Call 985-1313 to confirm your interest in attending. (
