Gallery seeks local artists

Hollis Jesse, owner and operator of Ricky's Galleria, located at 9101 Roosevelt Way NE, is looking for local artists to join her in creating a holiday gift store that will offer whimsical creations, silver jewelry, garden art and other "made-in-Washington" art pieces. Christmas Bazaar Nov. 10

North Seattle Christian School will hold a Christmas Bazaar and Bake Sale on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event, which features an array of homemade craft items and baked goods, will be held at the school, which is located on 8th Avenue NE, just south of NE 125th Street. Slavic language at Libraries

Seattle's Slavic-speaking community can receive library assistance in their native language thanks to a new outreach effort by Seattle Public Library's Leszek Chudzinski.

The Polish- and Russian-speaking librarian, who also can communicate in any Slavic language, is now making regular visits every second Thursday of the month to the Lake City Library (12501 28th Ave. NE; phone: 684-7518), from 1-3 p.m., and the Greenwood Library (8016 Greenwood Ave. N; phone: 684-4086), from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Chudzinski visits the North East Library (6801 35th Ave. NE; phone: 684-7539) every third Thursday, from 4-6 p.m.

Chudzinski is available to help Slavic-speaking patrons locate books, videos or other library material, help them use the Library's online catalog or Web site, and answer reference questions.

Miss Washington hopeful

Linda Bro, a senior at Nathan Hale High School, has been chosen as a finalist in this year's Miss Washington Teen USA Pageant. The pageant will be held Nov. 25 and 25 at the SeaTac Hilton Hotel. Bro, who is representing her community as Miss Lake City, is already taking classes at Shoreline Community College (through her high school's "Running Start" program) where she holds a 3.9 GPA. Bro also works as a cashier at Zeeks Pizza in Green Lake and volunteers 12 hours a week at the Lake City Chamber of Commerce. Bro needs additional sponsors to cover the costs of competing in the pageant. Her sponsors to date include Debi Harris of the Lake City Chamber, Miekos Athletic Club, Appian Construction, Group Health Credit Union, Alley Chevrolet, Rush Drake Insurance, Edward Jones Investments, Bill Pierre Dodge, and the Jet City Maven newspaper. Farmers Market season ends

The last day of the 2001 season for the University District Farmers Market is Saturday, Nov. 3. The market will celebrate the last day with music, beginning at 10 a.m., by Kyle Hanson and Lori Goldston of the Black Cat Orchestra. Jeff Treistman, chef of The Bungalow Wine Bar & Cafe in Wallingford, will give a cooking demonstration at noon. The University District Farmers Market is located on the playfield of University Heights Community Center on the corner of University Way NE and NE 50th Street. N Helpline benefit concert

The public is invited to join Brook Stanford, the "People Helper" reporter of KOMO-TV, at an afternoon concert Sunday, Nov. 4, to benefit the North Helpline. The annual North Helpline Community Choir Concert features six adult choirs and a special children's choir. The event, which begins at 4 p.m., will be held at the Prince of Peach Lutheran Church, 14514 20th Ave. NE in Lake City. Concert goers are asked to bring a can of food to help feed the hungry. A free-will donation will also be held at the event to support North Helpline, a tax-deductible charity serving North Seattle residents who have fallen on hard times, providing them with food, rent and utility assistance.

PNA celebrates 'Day of Dead'

The Phinney Neighborhood Association will hold a "Day of the Dead" celebration in observance of the Mexican holiday on Friday, Nov. 2. The festivities will begin with a procession of masked performers and stiltwalkers. The Phinney Gallery's November art show will feature traditional and modern personal altars created by local artists. Musical performances and dances are also planned. The event will take place at the Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N. The PNA is also seeking volunteers to help with the celebration. For more information, call Chardell at 783-2244. (
