Green Lake residents have been anticipating the closure of their library at 7364 E. Green Lake Drive N. and the start of renovations to the building for several months. Now, it looks like the library won't close until December at the earliest or possibly early next year.
The delay has been caused by the Seattle's Lankmarks Preservation Board's decision on Sept. 19 to submit the Green Lake Library building for consideration as a historical landmark. The Green Lake Library, which was constructed thanks to a donation from tycoon Andrew Carnegie, originally opened in 1910. It was designed by W. Marbury Somervell and Joseph S. Cote and has already by been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Seattle Public Library must now submit renovation plans for the Green Lake Library building to the Seattle Landmarks preservation board for its approval before the project can proceed.
The original renovation plan for the Green Lake Library, funded by the 1998 "Libraries for All" bond measure, provided over $600,000 to update the branch's collection, add more computers and seating, redesign the lobby and circulation desk for better efficiency and and provide better sound installation and interior light control.
