Burke-Gilman P-Patch proposed

In August, a new group called Friends of the Burke-Gilman P-Patch formed. Wallingford resident Joshua McNichols started the group to propose a new p-patch for the area along the Burke-Gilman Trail across from Waterway 18. The piece of land is currently a blackberry patch.

McNichols moved to Wallingford from Capitol Hill in July. He had been active in his old neighborhood's p-patch and was looking for a way get involved in a his new community. While he already had a plot in the Fremont P-Patch, McNichols saw a unique opportunity along the trail because that land could not be redeveloped.

So far, McNichols has sent letters about his proposal to nearby business owners and has met with community groups. He hopes to start applying for grants soon. McNichols said that there could be room for as many as 50 gardeners at the Burke-Gilman P-Patch, though it could start with as few as 20.

For details, contact Joshua McNichols at 547-1863 or bgpatch@hotmail.com.

City announces changes to yard waste service

Seattle Public Utilities recently announced the following changes to yard waste pick-up services throughout the city this fall and winter.

Through the month of November, yard waste subscribers may put out two additional containers of leaves with their scheduled every-other-week yard waste collection.

Beginning in December, yard waste pick-up will resume its winter schedule, changing from every other week to once a month. Subscribers may put out two additional containers with their one regularly-scheduled December collection as well.

SPU will ensure that "clean" yard waste is appropriately recycled, but remember that you can compost leaves for your own garden, too, as an alternative to waste collection. Leaves placed in your compost bin or circled with fencing or chicken wire only need moisture to compost. Most leaves will be ready to use in one year.

To ensure that your clean yard waste is properly handled by the City, remember:

€ Make sure your yard waste is "clean green," without garbage or other debris.

€ Do not place leaves in plastic bags - the bags are biodegradable. Use paper yard waste bags, a 32-gallon trash can clearly marked "yard waste" or "clean green," or bundle and tie with twine (bundles can be up to four feet in length and two feet in diameter).

€ Seattle residents must subscribe to the SPU yard waste program to receive yard waste pick-up service. To subscribe, or for more information, call 684-3000.
