Univ. Chamber hires director

In September, Teresa Lord Hugel took over the post of executive director with the Greater University Chamber of Commerce. Hugel replaces Janine Brackett who left the chamber in June, moving to the Bay Area.

By coincidence, Hugel is a former Bay Area resident herself, having owned two small businesses in Oakland: a frame shop and a business consulting firm.

Hugel moved to Washington state seven years ago, where she has held jobs with the Archdiocese of Seattle and most recently at the Leadership Institute of Seattle at Bastyr University in Kenmore. Hugel is currently earning her Master's in Applied Behavioral Science from the Leadership Institute.

As director, Hugel is considering several projects for the University Chamber including a possible new music and arts festival as well as starting a new food festival. Currently, the chamber is working with the federal government to launch a project called the Facade Improvement Program for Small Businesses, which will offer U-District merchants a chance to receive financial assistance for improvements such as paint and new signs.

For details, call the Greater University Chamber of Commerce at 547-4417.

Wide World Books wins national contest

Wide World Books in Wallingford recently won first place for best window design by a bookstore in a national contest held by book publishing giant Random House. The contest, titled "Explore Your Own Backyard," was for window displays of books on traveling within the United States. Wide World Books owner Simone Andrus said her window display featured road guides published by Fodor's, a division of Random House, as well as other books about traveling in the Pacific Northwest. The books were propped up against a treasure chest resting on a beach blanket surrounded by sand and seashells. The display was designed by Nadia Hakki and Cris Miller.

Children's Hospital to build new facility

The October 2001 newsletter of the View Ridge Community Council reports that Children's Hospital & Regional Medical Center will begin construction in either late October or early November of a new facility at its NE 70th and Sandpoint Way property. The new facility will house mostly administrative staff, including the hospital's human resources, data systems, development, education and training departments who are presently housed at off-site locations in Lake City and Northgate. A public meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 7 p.m. at Sand Point Community Methodist Church, to provide an update regarding the project. For more information, the View Ridger newsletter suggests the public call either 527-3881 or 526-2286.
