U VILLAGE EXPANSION PLANS GET GREEN LIGHT

The City's Department of Design, Construction and Land Use issued a master-use permit on July 26 to University Village Shopping Center for construction of a multi-level parking garage and an additional 111,000 square feet of retail shopping space, according to the August 2001 newsletter of the Laurelhurst Community Club.

Despite DCLU's determination that U Village's proposed expansion will have "non-significance" in terms of impact to the surrounding community, the Laurelhurst Community Council newsletter notes that "community groups have long argued that the project WILL have an adverse impact," both in terms of increased traffic to an already congested area, increased parking congestion in the surrounding residential area because of the failure to require the developer to provide on-site parking for the increased number of employees the new shops will hire, and the massive height, bulk and scale of the parking garage, which will be six stories tall, with blank walls on three sides. ...

MIXED-USE PROJECT IN BROADVIEW:

DCLU is currently reviewing a developer's proposed designs for a four-story mixed-use building containing 60 residential units and ground floor commercial space at 14300 Greenwood Ave. N in the Broadview neighborhood. For more information about the project (application number 2103703), contact DCLU Land Use Planner Scott Ringgold at 233-3856. ...

RESEARCH LAB IN LAURELHURST:

DCLU has issued a determination of significance regarding the potential environmental impacts of Talaris Research Institute's proposed construction of a three-story, 127,230-square-foot research lab at 4000 NE 41st St. in Laurelhurst. The project would contain labs, offices, an auditorium, library and child daycare facility, as well as two underground levels for parking. The developer has requested lowering the number of required parking spaces to 474, down from 734.
