Once again, the local controversy over sports field lighting was in evidence at a public meeting about proposed lighting and other impacts from sports fields at the old Jane Addams school and Nathan Hale High School in Meadowbrook.
Over 34 residents and other concerned citizens spoke at the June 7 meeting and opinions varied widely. Residents of Meadowbrook expressed concerns about lighting, parking problems caused by use of the fields and about the possible addition of a public-address system.
Neighbor Keith Hoeller said that the lights should be shut off by 9 p.m. and should not be on every night.
However, many members of the athletic community spoke in favor of the lights and of their concerns about the shortage of fields.
"If you cut the lights off at nine you can not play two games," said Kathleen Warren, a local athlete. "All I'm asking is to play half of my games in my neighborhood."
But nearby resident Jane Halton who was opposed to the field lights echoed the sentiments of many of her neighbors saying, "People need the dark and quiet of the night to wind down."
After the meeting, Hoeller expressed frustration that both residents and non-residents were given equal time to speak when a Seattle City Ordinance requires that a workshop be held for the community.
"It was supposed to discuss mitigation for neighbors within one-eighth of a mile," Hoeller said. "We basically feel that the law has been violated."
