Students receive Rotary scholarships

By SUSAN PARK

At the end of May, fourteen area students high school students were given scholarships by the Lake City Rotary during a Rotary awards ceremony.

Rotarian Tom Lord said that winning students were chosen from applications from both Shoreline Christian School and Nathan Hale High School. A committee of four or five Rotarians examine applicants grade point average and records. Lord says they look at service to the community above and beyond high school graduation requirements, letters of recommendation that show financial need, and read a one-page essay provided by the student. In addition, Lord says that since the Rotary is comprised of business owners and managers, they put a high value on actual work experience. The student's also must supply a letter of reference from a non-relative.

Chosen this year from the Jet City Maven's coverage area were Nathan Hale students Amy Vuong, Silvia Wong, Jennifer Fung, Anthony Shears, Michelle Mai, Joel Jacobson, Jessica Nielson, Ethan Carlson and Brian Lee.
