LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Reader shares Kalakala memories

I want to say THANK YOU for the great article about the Kalakala (published in the February 2000 issue of the Jet City Maven). It is truly a one-of-a-kind ship and it should be saved and Peter Bevis needs all the help he can get.

My reason for writing is this: I was a student at WSC when they bombed Pearl Harbor. At the end of the school year in June of 1942, none of my friends were going to go back the next fall semester.

During the summer break, a friend whose home was in Bremerton called me and said ³Why donıt you come over here ‹ you can live with my family and get a job in the office of the Bremerton Navy Yard where Iım working?² I lived in Yakima where I grew up. Well, I thought that it would be an adventure ... and it was.

On our days off from the Navy Yard office, my friend whose name is Destiny and I would ride the Kalakala to Seattle to shop. At that time, the interior of the Kalakala had an Art Deco interior. It was beautiful as I recall. I have been down in the Pioneer Square area where the Kalakala has a small office. I hope that Mr. Bevis will get help.

P.S. My friend Destiny now lives in the Bay Area with her daughter and family. We still stay in touch and are friends.
